Transcoding live video streaming

Transcoding combines a whole range of different digital media tasks (subsets). The basic definition of transcoding is decompressing/decoding media content such as changing the audio or video format (codec), adding watermarks, logos, or graphics to a video.

Transcoding is an important process in video streaming, including 2 parts:

  • Transrating — changing bitrates of the live stream ( converting an 8k video input stream of 25 Mbps into a lower-bitrate stream (called renditions)
  • Transsizing — resizing a video frame to a different resolution to fit various websites. (from a resolution of 3840×2160 (4K UHD) to 1920×1080 (1080p) or 1280×720 (720p))
